Mount Unnütz (2078 m), lake Achensee – an intermediate hiking tour for connoisseurs

Amazing views over lake Achensee and the imposing mountain landscape of Tyrol are the reward for this hiking tour. Located between Tegernsee and Innsbruck, the Achensee region is a relatively quiet and unspoiled trekking paradise (apart from the mountains that have a cablecar!). The hiking conoisseur can enjoy hikes without meeting masses of tourists and other outdoor enthusiasts.
The round trip onto Mount Unnütz includes 3 peaks (Vorderunnütz 2078 m, Hinterunnütz 2007 m, Hochunnütz 2075 m) and exceptional panorama views.

Preparation: Carry enough water for this long tour! You can buy food and drinks at Kögl hut and Zöhrer hut which are close to the starting point and the end point of the tour. You should wear proper hiking shoes and I would recommend to bring hiking poles. For basic hiking equipment check out this article.

The northern Unnütz peaks

Ascent: Starting at the parking lot south of the “Cordial Hotel” in Achenkirch.

Follow the signs directing to “Köglalm” and “Unnütz”. You will walk on a broad path until you get the chance to change rightward to a smaller trail after approximately 30 minutes. Leave the road and take the trail as from there you will enjoy astounding views of the crystal clear Lake Achensee and the mountains “Seekarspitze” and “Seebergspitze”. You will walk through the forest in the shadows on the slopy path.

After approximately 1,5 hours you will reach Kögl hut (1432 m | +43 5246 6458) which is open during summertime. From there the trail continues upwards in between dwarf pines until you reach the peak after another 1,5 hours. You can’t miss the direction as there are many signs. From the summit you can enjoy wonderful views over Lake Achensee, the Rofan mountains, Mount Guffert and the Austrian Alps.

Descent: You can take the same path back (2,5 hours).

Alternatively you can choose another, longer option and do a round trip. Beneath the summit cross of Vorderunnütz there is a small trail leading to the other two Unnütz peaks: Hochunnütz (2075m) and Hinterunnütz (2007 m). The path is slightly hidden, located on the eastern side of the mountain, ca. 30 meters from the cross. This trail leads over the ridge to the other summits (1 hour). For the following 2,5 hour descent you will most likely be happy you brought your hiking poles. Zöhreralm (1334 m | +43 644 54 016 87) serves food and drinks during summer time.
From there the trail continues and after another 1,5 hours you will reach a parking lot 3 km north of where you parked your car. From here you will have to walk back next to the busy street and then through the forest to reach the starting point.

A happy and save hike to all of you!

Tip: if you do this hike during summer time, don’t miss to jump into lake Achensee afterwards to refresh your spirits!

Born and raised in the beautiful Tegernsee region in Bavaria, I grew up in the midst of mountains. After my studies in art history I have been working in the art business for years and became a trained mountain guide in 2013. Every free minute I spend either outdoors - hiking, biking, skitouring and running - or around the world, traveling foreign countries. On, I am sharing my travel and hiking experiences as well as daily stories about a healthy, happy and mindful lifestyle.
