Austria, Tyrol, Achensee region:
a quiet, easy hiking tour for dry summerdays onto Sonntagsspitze (1926m) and Schreckenspitze (2022 m).
Close to the beautiful but super crowded Tegernsee region, the inclined outdoor enthusiast with a certain misanthropist disposition will find himself in paradise. This tour offers a lonely and quiet nature experience in the Achensee region in Tyrol, Austria. Expect outstanding views onto the Karwendel and Rofan mountains as well as encounters with various animals instead of humans. Consider going on a dry day as the transgression of the mountain ridge is too dangerous for wet weather and slippery grass.
Achenkirch (1050m) – Gröben hut (1508m, 1:00h) – Sonntagsspitze (1926 m, 2:00h) – Schreckenspitze (2022 m, 3:00 h) – Achenkirch (1050m, 5:00h)
Level of difficulty: easy, two short parts of very easy climbing. You wanna be free from giddiness for the ridge between the two peaks.
Length: 5 hours
Fitness level: medium
Altitude difference: 1150 m
Equipment: usual hiking gear
View: Karwendel and Rofan mountains
Map: Kompass no. 26
Starting point: 47.514618, 11.696228
How to get there
From Munich take the highway A 8 direction Salzburg. Take the exit “Holzkirchen” and drive direction “Tegernsee”. Drive towards “Kreuth” and “Achensee”. At the end of the city of Achenkirch follow the signs to the skiing area “Christlum” on your right side. Behind the cable car area of Christlum you will find a big parking space (1 € per hour | 5 € per day; make sure to bring coins!).

As it is an easy tour, no special preparation is needed here. The earlier you start, the more likely you will be alone on this tour. Bring enough food and water as there is no mountain inn (probably a reason for the small amount of humans in this area). Instead, you will meet many cows during summertime and, if you are lucky, see some chamois.
The trail starts directly at the parking lot behind the “Christlum” cablecar. Initially you will walk for about an hour through the valley and then slightly upwards until you reach the Gröbenalm (no food and drinks, just cows here). There is a water supply for the cows- in case you wanna do a refill of your bottle.
Continue on the left of the hut and follow the signs in red and white color. You will walk over meadows until you reach the back of the mountain – from here you view straight into the beautiful Karwendel region with its rough and rocky peaks. Continue leftwards, the peak of Sonntagsspitze always in sight. You will cross two parts that require some very easy climbing, one of them is protected by a 3 meter long cable. No equipment is needed here.
After a total of 2-2,5 hours you will have reached the first peak. Enjoy the lovely panorama – in the east you will spot Mount Guffert and The Unnütz mountain range. In the West the Karwendel mountains and in the South Mount Seekarspitze and Mount Seebergspitze.
Continue southwards over the ridge for another 30 minutes until you reach the second peak, Schreckenspitze. The ridge is steep on both sides and you shouldn’t do this tour when it is wet as the grass will be slippery!
Take the same way back, it will take you approximately 2,5 hours. I continued from Schreckenspitze to the south and climbed down eastward over the meadows (no trail here!) in order to reach a path you can see from the peak. I wouldn’t recommend to do that as the descent is slippery (long grass) and rocky and the path that follows is not particularly nice as it leads through the skiing area. It’ll lead you back to the parking lot as well though.
This area offers some really cool hikes! On the opposite side of Achenkirch you can check out a slightly longer hiking tour: The Unnütz mountain range. And make sure to climb Mount Seekarspitze and Mount Seebergspitze if you have some time and energy left!!
Watch out for wild herbs – you can find oregano, dandelion and other healthy greens for your salad!
